Build a medication reminder app

Help people follow a medication plan with timely reminders, clear instructions, and a simple way to record what happened. Ovok provides the FHIR-backed data layer for the app and clinician experience; your product defines the reminder experience around the plan approved by the user's care team.

1. Define the medication workflow

Decide who enters and updates the medication plan, how a patient confirms a reminder, and what the care team should see when a dose is reported as taken, skipped, or unknown. Keep medication changes under the authority of the prescribing clinician.

2. Represent the plan in FHIR

Use the appropriate medication resources for your workflow, such as MedicationRequest for a prescribed order and related medication information for display. Preserve the source and timing of the plan, and make changes traceable to the authorized user or system that made them.

Use @ovok/core for shared API and FHIR workflows. The patient-facing experience can use @ovok/native when you are building with React Native.

3. Create a patient-friendly reminder flow

Present the next scheduled reminder with the medication name and the instructions supplied by the approved plan. Let the patient record a response such as taken, skipped, or needs help. Design for quiet hours, time-zone changes, delayed notifications, and patients who share reminders with a caregiver.

Do not calculate a new dose, recommend a medication change, or infer that a reminder was followed merely because a notification was delivered.

4. Record adherence and context

Save the patient's response as a structured, timestamped event using the FHIR resource appropriate to the workflow. Keep patient-reported adherence distinguishable from a clinician-entered administration record. If a response needs follow-up, route it into a clinician review workflow rather than silently changing the medication plan.

5. Build the clinician view

Give clinicians a concise view of the active plan, upcoming reminders, patient-reported responses, and missed or unresolved check-ins. Include enough history to understand the pattern, and make the original medication order easy to inspect.

6. Add monitoring when the product needs it

If the app also collects vital signs for a clinical monitoring workflow, it can use Signals for alert evaluation. All vital-sign readings from a Signals-enabled product are sent to Signals, with resulting decisions surfaced through Ovok. A non-clinical reminder product can opt out. Keep medication adherence rules separate from vital-sign alerting and define each workflow with the clinical team.

Validate before rollout

Test changed or discontinued medications, duplicate reminders, offline use, missed notifications, caregiver access, and a patient's ability to correct a mistaken response. Verify that only authorized roles can change the plan.
