Get started with the example RPM app

Ovok Care is a runnable React Native example for the Ovok SDK. This guide takes you from a fresh checkout to the app running in an iOS simulator, then explains the optional setup for signing in to an Ovok sandbox and connecting real devices.

The app opens in Demo mode. Its example readings are synthetic, stay on the phone, and are never uploaded to a patient account. You do not need an Ovok account to run the demo.

What you need

For the documented iOS simulator path, have:

  • macOS with Node.js 24 or later;
  • Xcode with an iOS simulator installed;
  • CocoaPods available in your development environment;
  • Git and npm.

The repository uses Expo SDK 57 and React Native 0.86. Its lockfile records the package versions used by the app. Use the checked-in lockfile with npm ci; do not install a separate Expo or React Native version globally.

The app includes native Bluetooth dependencies, so run it as an Expo development build. Expo Go is not sufficient. A simulator can run the demo screens, but Bluetooth pairing requires a physical phone.

1. Clone the app and install dependencies

Open a terminal and run:

git clone https://github.com/Ovok-Dev/rpm-mobile-app.git
cd rpm-mobile-app
npm ci

npm ci installs the exact dependency tree from package-lock.json. If installation fails, check the Node.js version first, then remove node_modules and run npm ci again. Keep the lockfile; do not replace this step with npm install when following the example as published.

Explore the source: package.json lists the scripts and pinned dependencies; app.config.ts declares the native app and Bluetooth configuration.

2. Build and launch the iOS app

Start the native development build:

npm run ios

Choose an installed iPhone simulator when prompted. On the first run, Expo generates the native iOS project, installs its native dependencies, builds the app, and starts Metro. The initial native build takes longer than later JavaScript refreshes.

For subsequent development sessions, start Metro with:

npm start

Open the installed Ovok Care development app in the simulator. When Metro is already using its default port, the README documents using another port for the native run, for example:

npx expo run:ios --port 8091

Explore the source: App.tsx assembles the app providers and four tabs; app.config.ts supplies Expo's native configuration.

3. Explore Demo mode

The app has four tabs:

TabTry it
HomeRecord the synthetic ECG, enter a demo weight, and complete the short daily check-in.
DiaryReview the example readings, weight trend, ECG trace, and answers.
SupportFind device instructions and measurement troubleshooting.
SettingsSwitch appearance, reset demo history, or open the patient sign-in form.

The app seeds synthetic history so the diary is useful immediately. Demo records are stored separately from patient records, and the upload boundary rejects demo entries. Completing the demo does not create a patient, authenticate you, or send data to Ovok.

Explore the source: Home.tsx and Diary.tsx render the main experience; model.ts, care-store.tsx, and storage.ts define records, demo/patient separation, and local persistence.
