# PRECONDITION_REQUIRED

Canonical page: https://docs.ovok.com/errors/precondition-required

**HTTP 428.** Problem type: [`https://docs.ovok.com/errors/precondition-required`](https://docs.ovok.com/errors/precondition-required).

## What this means [#what-this-means]

The endpoint requires a precondition, but the request did not include one. This requirement lets the endpoint check that the operation is based on an appropriate resource state.

## Troubleshooting [#troubleshooting]

Consult the endpoint documentation to find which condition is required and how to obtain its current value. Read the resource or version information using the documented method, then check that your client preserves and sends the condition with the update. Do not assume that a specific header or field is required unless the endpoint says so.

## Retry safely [#retry-safely]

Include the required current condition and send the request again. Do not remove the endpoint's precondition requirement or substitute a guessed value; use [precondition failed](/errors/precondition-failed) if the supplied condition is rejected as stale.

## If the problem persists [#if-the-problem-persists]

Share the HTTP status, problem `type`, request path, response timestamp, and `traceId` with your administrator or support contact. Do not include access tokens or sensitive patient data. The [Error responses guide](/errors) explains the response fields and field-level errors.
